Okay so hear me out—my cousin started building his “dream home” in BC with a fancy custom builder and halfway through, the whole thing went sideways. His vision kept clashing with the builder’s ideas, and they were always “too busy” to explain delays. He told me to really know what I want before getting into it. Now I’m thinking of starting my own build in Alberta and I’m lowkey nervous. Like, how do I even make sure they actually listen to what I want???

I’ll say this—having built twice now, the builder’s communication style is everything. First time, I went with the cheapest quote. Big mistake. No updates, no consistency, and I had to micromanage every single decision. Second time, I found a crew who really listened and communicated every step of the way. That made all the difference. The builder you choose should make you feel like you're building together, not just signing checks.
